Faro has about 40.000 inhabitants and is situated on the lagoon Ria Formosa, the nature reserve. The average temperature in the so-called winter, is about 14° C. Accordingly, it is no wonder that this costal area of the Algarve is chosen by tourists all year. Faro is the present capital of the Algarve, Silves was it in former days. A stroll through the city is very rewarding. Impressive, very well-preserved city walls to be admired, which are relics of the past, when Arabs and Romans doninated that city. The Arabs called this town before “Ossonoba”. The excellent and elaborate works of the old pavement, you should pay special attention, it is amazing. As in the whole country, there are also many sacral buildings in Faro, such as the Cathedral “Se”. Extremely impressive is also the art work of human bones in the “Nossa Senhora de Carmo” which is desended from 1.200 monks. Other points of interests are: Bishop`s Palace, the Archeological Museum or the Maritime Museum and more… The cultural life is enriched by an ambitious program of theater, as well as various galleries and artisans. Faro is also a university city and the international airport become increasingly important. But those who prefer going out for lunch or shopping, they will find plenty of opportunity in Faro.Today it represents the administrative center of the Algarve. Antiquity and modernity found here together beautifully, a lively and friendly city. Hardly to understand why sometimes tourists ignore visiting the capital of the Algarve. Near the port there is a footbridge where you can check out the schedules of the ferry.
